A Community United in Remembrance: 761 Poppies Create a Stunning Tribute at Valley Park School
In a moving display of creativity, respect and unity, Valley Park School in Maidstone brought its community together to create a powerful tribute for Remembrance Day.
Led by Mrs Beard, Head of Art and Design, the project invited students, staff, families, and local residents to contribute to a unique community artwork made entirely of handmade crochet and knitted poppies — a symbol of remembrance, gratitude and togetherness.
The response was extraordinary. Across the school and wider community, people of all ages picked up knitting needles and crochet hooks to take part. The result is a remarkable installation featuring 761 handmade poppies, each one representing remembrance and care.
Now proudly displayed within the school, the artwork stands as both a heartfelt tribute to those who served and a celebration of community spirit — reflecting Valley Park’s core values of being ambitious, respectful, and kind.
Mrs Beard said: ‘It’s been incredible to see how our community embraced this project. Every poppy tells a story, and together they form a powerful reminder of remembrance and the strength of working together.’
The installation will remain on display throughout November, inviting reflection, pride, and appreciation from all who visit the school.
