Turning on the subtitles while children are watching television can double the chances of a child becoming good at reading!
During the pandemic, children around the globe have spent extended periods of time away from schools with many going backwards or no longer progressing when it comes to reading. According to the campaign, Turn on the Subtitles, a recent study revealed this small change can double a child’s chance of becoming a proficient reader, with no additional cost to the family.
In light of this, the campaign urges parents to help combat the barriers to reading by doing exactly that –switching the subtitles on while their children are watching TV!
Campaigners are also calling for broadcasters to automatically show subtitles on children’s programming. Stephen Fry and Phillip Schofield are among the celebrities to back a campaign arguing for subtitles to always be turned on to improve children's reading.
As a school, we are incredibly excited by this campaign’s fight for change; such a simple adjustment can provide really impactful outcomes. Internationally, the programme claims to be the world’s biggest Literacy campaign and is helping over 300 million children learn to read.
