Rowing to Silver

On 8 February, Year 9 student Tom Dixon entered the British Indoor Rowing Championships at the Lea Valley Velodrome in London’s Olympic Park...

'I was rowing against over 50 Year 9 competitors,' Tom said. 'The race was for the best distance covered in 4 minutes. My game plan was to aim for 31 strokes per minute for the first 3 minutes and then to sprint on the last minute.'

Tom managed a personal best distance of 1,123m, which won him a Silver medal. 'I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved,' he continued. 'I’ve been rowing for just over 12 months and I’ve been training and working hard on my technique.'

Tom's dad, Paul, is also his coach. 'Tom is rowing at the Maidstone Head on March 8th, both in a coxed quad & individually,' he said. 'This event is also the regional trials so he is hoping to be selected to row at the junior inter-regionals later in the year.'
