Applied Science
This is a practical, work-related course that combines academic knowledge with the skills needed to pursue a career in a scientific setting. All science disciplines are covered, providing you with a broad based Science qualification.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
- 2 GCSE Sciences: Grade 5
- GCSE Mathematics
- English Language or Literature: Grade 4

WHAT TO EXPECT
Lots of independent laboratory work. Frequent calculations and mathematical problem solving. Frequent assignments/written reports that count towards your final grade. High level of challenge, particularly in the examination units, which cover all three disciplines (Biology, Chemistry and Physics).

HOW IT’S ASSESSED
Assessment is through portfolio and external examination. Four units are taken, two of which are externally assessed and two of which are portfolio-based.

WHY CHOOSE THIS SUBJECT?
Students should study the Applied Science course if they enjoy the practical side of the subject and its application to real life. This course is excellent for students who like Science but are unsure of which area to specialised in, it provides a broader range of scientific knowledge. It teaches transferable skills and critical thinking that is a fantastic opportunity for students to further their career should they wish to go directly into industry or attend university.
