Your Application Letter

For Work Experience

  • The letter should be written in a business-like fashion and no more than one side of A4.  You should use blank, white A4 paper and should type the letter in Arial font, size 11.
  • If you start a letter ‘Dear Sir/Madam’ you should finish it with ‘Yours faithfully’. When you know the name of the person you should finish with ‘Yours sincerely’.
  • There should be approximately three or four paragraphs in the letter.  The first paragraph being an introduction for writing, the second (and third of necessary) should give information about you.  The final paragraph should be the signing off paragraph where you say you look forward to a response.  There should be a line space in between each paragraph to make the letter clear and readable. Make sure your letter is clear and concise.
  • When mentioning your GCSE/BTEC subjects write ’Mathematics’ in full not ‘Maths’. English and subject names should all start with a capital letter.
  • Check your spelling and grammar.  Ask someone else to double check it.
  • Usually on a letter of application you would put your name and address. DO NOT do this for the work experience letter. Put the address of the school for replies. You can put Miss Willis down as a link if necessary.
  • Sign your letter.
  • If a response is sent to the school you will be notified, usually via your school email address.
  • A letter is usually not enough. Sending this via email and following up with a phone call to get confirmation of your placement is usually required.
  • Forward any correspondence of a confirmed placement to Miss Willis in case a health and safety check needs to be completed before you start your placement and to confirm where you will be and when.
